A day-long strike to protest the arrival of Indian troops in Kashmir in 1947 shut most of the shops and businesses in the revolt-hit region's main city. Indian troops landed in Kashmir on October 27, 1947, after the Himalayan region's Hindu ruler-Maharaja Hari Singh sought help from India to fend off an invasion by Pakistan-backed tribesmen. The Maharaja initially held out for independence of Kashmir, when Britain withdrew from the Indian subcontinent in August 1947.
